How Many Tamil People Know About Hindi
We Tamilians do learn Hindi as our third language in our schools. And most of them prefer taking Hindi as their second language over Tamil. I
guess around 30 to 40% of us can speak Hindi whereas some people like me know to read and write whereas cant speak. Since my mother tongue is
Sourashtra, I personally feel certain familiarity among a few words of
Hindi. So, I could recognize the actual content delivered but still struggle to converse in Hindi.
Over the years, many of us have learned to speak Hindi owing to the working environment. And for few people, it becomes mandatory to know the ABCs’ of our national lingo to converse with the auto wallas or street vendors, if at all they had to lead their job life in North India.
Our way of talking Hindi may not be relevant to the colloquial form of North Indians, and we still mix a bit of Tamil accent while conversing that you can easily spot us in a crowd of Hindi talking people. We can still manage with a broken Hindi like “Acchha”, “Take”, “ Hindi Nahi malum”, “Thoda Thoda” and with few “iske” and “uske”s here and there.
